Transgender Patients at HRBR
Hair can play an important role in affirming a patient’s gender. The team at HRBR have extensive experience in assisting transgender patients in meeting their goals. Whether our patients wish to remove hair via laser hair removal or adjust their hair line via hair transplant surgery the team can guide you in the process.
Laser Hair Removal
Many transgender patients attend HRBR for laser hair removal. Facial and neck hair removal is the most popular in transgender women and can be very successful if the patient is suitable.
Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light (laser) to remove unwanted hair. Laser hair removal results in the permanent reduction of hair in the treated area.
It should be noted that for best results a course of 6 to 8 treatments are required initially with top up treatments required thereafter.
During laser hair removal, a laser emits a light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the hair follicles that produce hairs. This damage can stop or reduce future hair growth. For this reason, patients with blonde, grey or red hair are usually not suitable for laser hair removal treatments.
The first step in treatment for laser hair removal is an initial consultation with our laser team.
Transgender Hair Transplant
The planning and design of hair transplantation in transgender patients can differ to that of cisgender patients. For some transgender patients they may not be suffering from hair loss yet but wish to adjust their hair line to better match their gender identity. For others they may be suffering from pattern hair loss already and the option of adjusting their hair line will use up some of their limited amount of donor hair that could be required in the future and so careful planning is required.
For all transgender patients, mtf or ftm, the team will assess the patient’s current hair status to predict the potential future hair loss. The plan for the patient’s hair transplant will then be prepared with the patient’s wishes in mind along generally accepted design principals as guided by our consultants.
Medical Treatments for Hair Loss
For both transwomen and transmen, the process of losing hair can be upsetting. For many transgender patients the hormone therapy they are taking can influence their hair, for some this means more hair and for others the increased loss of hair. The treatments available to treat your hair loss medically may depend on the hormone therapy you are taking and our doctors can guide you in this regard in conjunction with the doctor prescribing your hormone therapy treatments.
The first step in treatment for hair loss is a consultation with one of our qualified doctors. If you would like to arrange a consultation, contact us today.
